How to Turn Off Instagram's New AI Image Feature (And Why Parents Should)

Parents, schools, and every small business owner with a public Instagram — five minutes today.

This week Meta rolled out a new AI image tool (Muse Image) built into Instagram. Here's the part that matters: if your account is public, you're automatically opted in to letting other people generate AI images using your photos. Someone just tags your username in a prompt, and Meta AI builds an image from your public pictures. You won't be notified when it happens.

For a school, a youth program, or a parent posting kids' photos, this isn't a fun novelty. It's a consent and safeguarding issue — your images, your likeness, other people's AI creations, no heads-up. And anything already generated won't be deleted even after you turn it off. So the sooner you shut it off, the less gets made.

How to turn it off (US, rolling out now):

1. Update your Instagram app first — the setting language is new and won't show until you do.

2. Open Instagram, tap your profile, tap the three lines (top right).

Go to Sharing and reuse.

3. Find "Allow people to use your content on Instagram and with AI features on Meta."

4. Toggle off both Posts and Reels.

Setting your account to private also stops it — but for a school or business page that's usually not an option, so the toggle is your fix.

The bigger lesson: platform defaults change constantly, and they almost always change toward more sharing, not less. Nobody sends you a memo. Check your settings a couple times a year — on every platform, not just this one.
